Here at Rex Software, we were thrilled to celebrate International Women's Day this year, with a focus on creating a more enriching experience for everyone involved. However, we did receive some valid feedback beforehand when someone asked, "We love the cupcakes, but are they really changing anything?"
This question made us reflect on the true purpose of this day. International Women's Day originated over 100 years ago as a day of protest, where women marched for equal pay, voting rights, and reduced working hours. And yet, despite the progress made, as of 2023, the gender pay gap still persists. In recent years, IWD has transformed into a day of morning teas and other similar events, which women are often expected to organize themselves.
With this in mind, our goal this year was to provide a more meaningful experience and spark conversations around equality in all its aspects. We wanted to work behind the scenes to bridge the gap and cultivate more equitable workplaces.
One of the highlights of the day was when some of our amazing colleagues attended the Women in Digital IWD Breakfast Event, hosted by Women in Digital. Meanwhile, our wider teams, who are spread out across multiple locations, joined a seminar led by Claudette Llapitan, Strategic Partnerships Manager at Tech Diversity. Claudette spoke to us about diversity, inclusion, equity, and equality, and shared practical steps that individuals, teams, leaders, and businesses can take to drive change.
It was especially heartening to see our male colleagues, who are fantastic allies, also taking part in the seminar. We are encouraged by the growing diversity amongst the group, and although we still have a long way to go, we are definitely taking steps in the right direction.
On this year's International Women's Day, we were reminded of the importance of creating inclusive and diverse workplaces, where everyone feels valued and heard. We believe that by working together, we can create a brighter and more equitable future for all.
